I object! Not very harshly but slightly. I'm a big gay bum boy for the ps2 controller. The postion of the analog sticks has never bothered me, nor do I use them in games I play. You don't really use as Ps2 for FPS so its not a big deal. I've always found that for my hands it does sit quite nicely. I don't usually get cramp and my thumb can take rotating round the d-pad for hours before it hurts. Now thats my big love of the PS2 controller, the D-pad. Of all the next gen consoles and ones previous it has the best d-pad, I believe. Most people say you can't feel the diagonals but I think thats bullshit. For fighting games especially its a great d-pad. The only minor problem could be they wear down a bit quick.
Now the PS3 controller, i'm not a fan of. I don't like the syncronisation thing. I hate the dodgy R2, L2 triggers and it has uselessly ripped off the wi's motion sensing tech, to a shit degree.
360 controllers are ok for X-box type games like Halo, Gears of War, other FPS etc. I don't think "d fighters would do well on it as the d-pad is one of those dodgy all around pads. Thats my biggest problem with 360 controllers.
I agree fully on your wi-mote points. I don't know about other games but the sideways control style for xcite truck works perfectly. We'll see how mario kart fairs. Need to get my hands on a classic to see how well brawl and the wi release of Accent core will do however.
yeah..i was basically gonna say what mono said...the ps2/ps3 controller's greatest strength is the d-pad...while not the best d-pad ever..it seems to be the best out your standard controller options, and as you well know we've been playing plenty of 2d fighters recently...
i don't really find the analogue sticks a stretch, but i'll happily concede that the left analogue for the xbox360 is better placed...but inevitably that sacrifices the position of the d-pad which, if you want to use for anything other than extra "call" buttons in FPSs...seems useless.
the triggers for the ps3 controller im slightly torn about...while not great...they seems to be semi-useful in racing games...they give you an easily controllable degree of throttle...saying that they're useless wit everything else, and the old triggers are better...
the ps3 also has miniUSB..i dunno if they're gonna use that to add peripherals like the wii or the xbox..but it certainly has the potential.
i'll also admit you kinda mould your hands round a ps2 controller...actively holding rather than resting...but i quite like that...somehow it feels more like gaming to me when i start to holder the controller tighter because it's a close fight or a zombie just jumped out at me.
there are some minor changes to the ps3 in the fact its considerably lighter and the plastic is more matt...while relatively insignificant these do make some difference, in that its less effort to hold the controller, and long play-throughs don't make the controller sweaty..
overall, much like you, the wiimote is my favourite, and while it has its flaws its nicely designed and its very innovative.
i actually thought FPSs worked very well with the wiimote...while Redsteel was a horrible game...the control aspect of shooting worked quite nicely...it was just when the game decided to glitch and send you into a spiral of looking round and round...but this was the software rather then the controller itself.
while the wiimote hasn't got enough buttons for your conventional games, any more buttons could just make the controller clumsy, and it wouldn't be able to sit in your hand as nicely. I do wish they had used either coloured buttons or shapes as-well as simply letters and numbers...this seems more intuitive and sony/microsoft/sega have continued to do this..it's much easier remembering where traingle is or yellow is, than Z is... playing games with a large number of button inputs always gets confusing...i can especially never remember which button is which on the nunchuck...
for you generic console FPSs, hats off to the x360...it definitely has it. But the wiimote is generally the most fun controller to use, with greatest potential. for me at least the updated snes/ps1/ps2/ps3 style controller is still your best for generic gaming...it's an all rounder...though i'm sure there's room for tweaking yet...(without making it into a boomerang..)
both your points make sense, the d pad is extremely good on the ps2/ps3 controller and therefore is a good pad for 2d fighters, however thats a limited amount of games ( i understand however those are the games you play so thats fair enough) analogue sticks are better for most ( if not all) games and i really dont rate the ps2/3 placement of it.
